Company description:: On Sunday February 16, Mr. Gunnar Hallgren the logistics expert from Star of Hope International Sweden arrived to assist our staff in Haiti as they make plans to respond to the starvation and agricultural disaster in the making. Within our communities, there are more than 50,000 people at risk, including the 5,000 children and their families.
Haiti is in turmoil due to the political unrest. There are extreme humanitarian needs as people are cut off and isolated throughout the country. Starvation is being reported in some areas because the roads are blocked preventing transportation of everyday goods as well as humanitarian supplies.
Star of Hope Projects to the North and Southwest of Port-au-Prince have been without supplies for as much as a month now. Teachers are without salary as supplies in the countryside are dwindling. This means that there is little if any food available to buy. When fuel is available, it is being brought in on motorcycles and is being sold by the soda bottle. Many of our projects are shut down as parents want to keep their children with them in case violence erupts in their areas.
However a larger disaster is looming. March is the month for planting. Because of the starvation, hunger and inability to travel and buy and sell any products, the peasant agricultural people of rural Haiti are consuming the seed stock that they held back from the previous harvest. It appears that in many areas of Haiti there will be nothing to plant which will result in long term hunger and starvation.
By utilizing the expertise of Mr. Hallgren and the local knowledge, trust and experience of Tony Boursqiuot, our manager in Haiti, we expect to be able to begin providing aid at the first moment it is possible. We plan a two pronged effort, the first meeting the immediate need of food to thwart starvation. Along side this effort we will provide seeds, fertilizer and needed agricultural supplies to enable the people to get the next crop in the ground. Our expertise in disaster relief and community based development will greatly multiply the affects of our relief.
Immediate need of cash donations is vital for us to carryout these plans. Please consider buying a bag of seed ($50) or helping provide transportation or food with a smaller donation. Your gift will be added to the many already coming in throughout the Star of Hope world and together we will prevent thousands from starving and prevent the nightmare of widespread hunger without a new crop. Donations may be made on-line at www.starofhope.org, by mail to Star of Hope International, PO Box 427, Ellinwood, KS 67526-0427. You may telephone us at (620) 564-3355.
