Company description:: We have all seen runaway or homeless young people. They congregate in certain areas downtown and hang out in malls during inclement weather. Mostly, they look like the other kids: sometimes in outrageous costumes, sometimes in jackets and sneakers, maybe in gang colors. The difference is that they won’t be going home.
Once on their own, runaway and homeless youth face many challenges on the streets. Because of their age, they have few legal means by which they can earn enough money to meet their basic needs. Some youth have not been on their own long enough to run out of money and some still have ties to their home or relatives. Others become acquainted with street savvy peers who may already be engaged in high-risk behaviors like exchanging sex for food, clothing and shelter. As a result, many homeless youth are at a greater risk of contracting AIDS or HIV-related illnesses and are vulnerable to physical and sexual assault.
All these young people are angry and hurt. They need time and safe place to think things out and they need adults who care. One of the services offered by The Center for Youth located in Rochester New YorK, is short term, emergency shelter for runaway and homeless youth in the Host Home program. The Host Home program connects youth with volunteer families and individuals who want to help homeless youth without personal gain or a financial reward. Host Home volunteers open their homes and their hearts to young people 12–17 years old. They provide a safe haven that enables the young person to resolve the immediate crisis and, with the help of a Center counselor develop plans to resolve to their problems.
Too often, youth who ask for shelter are turned away because of a shortage of emergency beds. There is a serious lack of resources available to keep kids safe. We must all pause to ask ourselves what each of us can do to prevent our community's children from being subjected to the many dangers awaiting them on the streets. If you would like to explore what it means to be a Host Home volunteer, please contact The Center for Youth, 585-473-2464 or rdavis@centerforyouth.net |
