Eastern PA students debate with former U.S. Ambassador, author, award winners.

Sixteen students from an eastern Pennsylvania high school’s gifted program are participating in an online, interactive forum that will allow them to debate issues with a former U.S. Ambassador, an internationally acclaimed psychologist, an author who has won a Newbery Honor, and an award winning classical pianist.

These students are participating in the Pen Pal Project administered by High IQ for Humanity, an international humanitarian organization that provides education services to gifted children living in developing countries. The Pen Pal Project allows students from all over the world to meet in a secure online forum and discuss topics of interest with guest speakers that High IQ for Humanity invites.

Guest speakers for the spring of 2004 include former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Dr. David. H. Shinn, professor of psychology at the University of Tel Aviv and author of over twenty books Dr. Avner Ziv, author and winner of a Newbery Honor Stephanie Tolan, and pianist Sandrine Erdely-Sayo.

Ms. Erdely-Sayo, called by critics, “one of the best pianists of her generation,” has performed internationally and won numerous awards. She will perform in person this May at East Stroudsburg High School for the project participants and other students. Afterward, she will speak with the students and answer questions.

Two students at the high school, Jiun Kimm and Amanda Hauth, under the guide of teacher JoAnn Chromicky, initiated the school’s collaboration with High IQ for Humanity and are coordinating student participation. High IQ for Humanity hopes that this collaboration will lead to the participation of more schools in Pennsylvania, as the Pen Pal Project grows to involve hundreds of students from all over the world.

High IQ for Humanity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. For more information on the Pen Pal Project, or to sponsor a child, visit www.HIQH.org. If you would like to recommend a school to participate in the Pen Pal Project, send email to INFO@HIQH.ORG.
