Company description::
Washington DC - April 18, 2004 – Much of Washington’s young, professional South Asian community came together on April 17th for a night of elegance and fun at the Network of South Asian Professionals (NetSAP-DC) Charity Ball 2004: FIRE & ICE. This annual black-tie style gala was held at the Hilton Washington and attracted over 250 members and patrons who enjoyed an evening of mock casino-style gambling, dining, and dancing in support of three worthy South Asian causes-- ASHA, the UN Foundation, and Pratham.

Guests started off the evening testing their luck at the tables of the Vegas-style mock casino, while sipping martinis made on the slopes of the ice luge and sampling many of the tasty hors’ douvres. Later, attendees strolled the tables of the Silent Auction, placing their bids on items and services donated by generous Washington-area individuals and businesses. Some of the most popular items this year included a trip to Malaysia, a weekend spa package to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Day Spa in Tyson’s Corner, and a Bose home stereo system.

The dramatics were saved for the event’s highlight, the Live Date Auction, where Ball attendees waged a war for some of DC’s most eligible bachelors and bachelorettes and their very creatively planned and adventurous dates. This year’s group of talented and driven individuals planned dates that featured trips to Manhattan, Disney World, and Atlantic City, and adrenaline-filled activities such as hang gliding lessons, sailing lessons, and hot air balloon rides. It was considered by many to be the most entertaining portion of the evening. “It got pretty heated and exciting for a moment up there as two people were going back and forth for one of the bachelorettes. The bidding reached almost $2000 before one of the bidders decided that the price was just too high and bowed out,” said Mihir Shah, Co-Chair, NetSAP-DC’s Charity Ball 2004.

All in all, this year’s Live and Silent Auctions generated nearly $10,000 for the three beneficiaries of the event-- ASHA, a DC-area organization dedicated to helping South Asian women who have been victims of domestic abuse; the UN Foundation, an international charity dedicated to improving children’s health, empowering women, preventing the HIV virus, and preserving the environment in India; and Pratham, a grass roots charity initiated by UNICEF in 1994 that promotes the education of underprivileged children in India. This year, the UN Foundation agreed to match dollar-for-dollar NetSAP-DC’s contribution to its group of charities.

“It’s always great when you can bring people together in support of great and deserving causes, and have a little fun in the process. The organization and our volunteers have worked hard putting this event together and tonight we got to see all our efforts come to fruition. We are proud of the type of work these charities do and are honored to be associated with them,” said Pratik Mittal, Co-Chair, NetSAP-DC’s Charity Ball 2004.
