Company description::
Bronx, New York–April 29, 2004– The New York Botanical Garden will host the international traveling exhibition The Flowering Amazon: Margaret Mee Paintings from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, beginning April 23, 2004 and continuing through July 25, 2004. On loan from Kew, this exhibition bridges the worlds of art, science, and conservation through the luminous botanical art and acute scientific observations of Margaret Mee.

The exhibition will be presented in the William D. Rondina and Giovanni Foroni LoFaro Gallery of the Garden’s LuEsther T. Mertz Library.

Margaret Mee Day is a not-to-be-missed insight into the work of the artist. On May 13, Continuing Education offers three talks and a curator-led tour for a rare, behind-the-scenes opportunity to learn about Margaret Mee’s paintings, explorations, and affiliation with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Originally exhibited in a private showing for His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the exhibit is the first showing in the United States on its two-year tour.

The Garden is honored to have Peter Crane, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, gives an intimate portrait of Mee in the introductory talk. Crane presents an overview of Kew’s relationship with Margaret Mee, the collection, and her role as a premiere botanical artist. Ruth L.A. Stiff, FLS, curator of North American Exhibitions for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the curator of the exhibit, presents an illustrated lecture portraying Margaret Mee's development as an artist within the historic context of Amazonian exploration and botanical illustration. Scott Mori, Ph.D., who knew Margaret Mee in Brazil, presents an illustrated lecture about botanical explorers of the Amazon and the plants that attracted them to one of the most botanically diverse areas of the world.

Talks from 9:30 a.m. till 12:00 p.m. Tours of the exhibition begin at noon.
